TRY (Teens Reaching Youth) is a leadership group sponsored by the Hawthorn Middle School North social workers, Lori Rockoff and Brian Van. The group consists of an equal number of boys and girls (six seventh graders and twelve eighth graders) who have been recommended by teachers and administrators. The TRY students have been identified as having strong leadership, academic and social skills, as well as exceptional understanding and use of the four C's; critical thinking, communication, collaboration and creativity. All TRY students are required to participate in a three day leadership training during the summer. 8th grade TRY students also attend an overnight two day leadership training event. The TRY students have wonderful opportunities to utilize and implement their skills throughout the school year. Some of the unique experiences include facilitating sixth grade orientation and mentoring students at Hawthorn Elementary North during lunchtime.
